The exhibition tour introduces the key events in the life and work of the prominent avant-garde couple Mikhail Matyushin and Elena Guro. Through portraying each other, exchanging ideas, and experimenting with the synthesis of the arts, Matyushin and Guro made a lasting impact on painting, music, literature, and theatre of their time. Their story is not only a chapter in Russian art of the early 20th century, but also a moving and inspiring tale of great love.
During the tour, you will learn about the main stages and themes of their creative collaboration. From founding Russia’s first avant-garde association, The Union of Youth (Soyuz Molodyozhi), and launching their own publishing house, Zhuravl, which printed key Futurist texts, to developing an entire movement within the Russian avant-garde focused on the organic evolution of form. Special attention is given to their collaborative projects, where the concept of art synthesis is most vividly expressed. In these pieces, Matyushin and Guro appear not only as visual artists, but also as a composer and a writer, respectively.
