The Zotov Centre's Theatrical Project: A Series of Readings Unfilmed Scripts

Andrei Tarkovsky, Elem Klimov, Larisa Shepitko, Aleksei Balabanov – these and many other directors shaped the Russian cinema that is known and loved around the world. A cinema that became part of our cultural DNA, through which we glimpsed our destinies and the horrors of history, and searched within ourselves for the base, the sublime, and the eternal.

But what did these auteurs never get the chance to tell us? Many films remained nothing more than black letters on white paper, leaving it to the viewer to imagine the stories and characters that never made it to the screen.

The Unfilmed Scripts series brings to life those texts that never heard the word ‘action’. Many of the scripts featured in the project are not publicly available, they have been kept in family archives for years, and now, even if just once, they will finally find their voice.

Each reading features a new director and a new creative team, who will craft an audio version of the film through acting, light and sound. The audience’s imagination will fill in the rest.
